Navajo Nation casinos may face permanent closures

January 6, 2021
The Navajo Nation laid off more than 1,100 casino workers on New Years Day due to the lack of revenue caused by COVID-19 closures going back to March 17, 2020. Permanent closures may have to be considered by the end of this month.

Navajo casino employment is now reduced to 165 total workers. A statement has been released by Brian Parrish, the tribal casino operation's Interim CEO, regarding the layoffs:
'Due to the extended closure, since March 17, 2020, our business operations have been severely impacted and as a result, we must make very difficult financial and personnel decisions.'
- Brian Parrish, CEO
The Navajo Nation has invested $460 million in its casinos. Revenues from the casinos and other investments were $220 million per year, however that revenue has been lost during the prolonged casino closures of COVID-19.
Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise interim CEO issued a warning the tribe may be forced to permanently close its casinos by the end of January
Quincy Natay, Chairman of the Navajo Gaming Board, fears the prolonged shutdowns will force permanent casino closures as early as the end of January unless they can reopen safely with reduced capacity or receive financial assistance.
'The Nation's vision took years to build but the Nation has been successful. If it allows its gaming industry to fail, a permanent closure will cause a long-term setback for Navajo economic development, even if it eventually reopens.'
- Quincy Natay, Chairman
Permanent closures would result in the loss of the $460 million casino investment and the $220 million in revenues each year.
The Navajo Nation casinos are the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort in Arizona and the Fire Rock Navajo Casino, Flowing Waters Navajo Casino and Northern Edge Navajo Casino in New Mexico.

Navajo buy historic Flagstaff steakhouse and land
December 12, 2019
The Navajo Nation has purchased land and an historic steakhouse in Flagstaff. The cost was $5.2 million for 14 acres that includes the Horsemen Lodge Steakhouse.
The Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise do not have a current plan for casino gaming on the property, but the future possibility is left open. The process would take many years for federal and local approvals.
The immediate plan is to draw more restaurant and passerby traffic to the Twin Arrows Casino Resort located 15 miles east of Flagstaff.
The land adjacent to the Horsemen Lodge will be used to improve the access onto and off Highway 89. New acceleration and deceleration lanes are planned. The Horsemen Lodge is currently leased back to the former owners.
