In the past months, we wrote twice about Short Deck Hold'em (where and how to play it and the Winning Poker Network adding 6+ tables). For several reasons, the game again began to gain popularity both offline and online. It is popular among poker fans for the high level of action and now it can be played not only in low and medium stakes (Winning Poker Network and iPoker) but also in high stakes in the PokerKing Asia application.
- Six Plus Hold’em (6+), also called Short Deck Poker, is a community card poker game based on Texas Hold’em. While most of the rules are the same, there are three main differences between the two. In 6+ Hold’em, the cards from deuces through fives are removed to make the total deck just 36 cards instead of the usual 52.
- In traditional Texas Hold’em this is the worst starting hand, and almost completely unplayable. Well, as you can probably work out yourself quite easily, in Six Plus the equivalent hand is J 6 offsuit, which, let’s be honest, would rarely be played even in our normal game!
- Rules of 6+ Hold’em. In PokerStars’ version of Six Plus Hold’em, instead of the traditional “small blind” and “big blind”, the game uses a “button blind” structure meaning every player on the table pays an ante while the player on the Button not only pays the ante but also pays a blind equivalent to the size of the ante.
- Short Deck Hold’em (6+) – v133. An adapted Short Deck (6+) variant of GTO+ is now also available. Download 64 bit version Download 32 bit version Download zipped version. The Short Deck variant is currently offered in beta. From what we can tell all equity and hand strength calculations are performed correctly.

There are no developed strategies for 6+ Hold'em yet. All the information available on the internet is limited to a few tips on the game (which we already quoted). For those who want to develop their own strategy for 6+ Hold'em, today we will present a software created specifically for that — CombCalc6Plus; this piece of software calculates our chances against the opponents.
What is CombCalc6Plus?
CombCalc6Plus functionalities include:
- Calculates the equity of a particular hand against a hand range of one or more opponents preflop or other streets;
- Calculating the odds of the hand range of one or more opponents in the flop with the output matrix.
- Creating your own hand range with any hand in percentage and save it as a separate file
The user can customize the software and the folder location. Detailed instructions on how to work with the program and create your own hand range can be found on the developer's website.
Its most important advantage is that you will be able to have a better understanding of the mathematics behind Short Deck Hold'em and its main differences with classical Hold'em, understanding the hand range of the opponents or yourself in different scenarios.
How much does CombCalc6Plus cost?
The calculator has a free two-week trial license with full functionality. After your trial expires you can get a yearly license for $50. Skrill and PayPal are accepted for payments.
The trial and license are requested on the software:
- Fill the form. In the affiliate line, enter the code WPD and get 1 month of trial version instead of the regular 2 weeks;
- After that, click on the RequestLicense button and save the file to your computer;
- Send it to the developer e-mail: [email protected];
- Wait for an updated file and copy it into the program folder.

6+ Hold’em is a popular 'short deck' poker format that plays much like Texas Hold’em, but with a few exciting differences:
- All cards lower than a six are removed from the deck
- Everyone posts an ante and only the button posts a blind - known as the 'button blind'
- A flush beats a full-house and Ace, 6, 7, 8, 9 is classified as a straight
Available exclusively at PokerStars 6+ Hold’em is your chance to play an action-packed variant loved by high-stakes players around the world.
The Rules of 6+ Hold’em
All 6+ Hold’em games use a 36-card deck (with all cards lower than a 6 removed), which is shuffled before every hand is dealt. Games also use a 'button blind' structure: every player posts an ante, and the player seated at the button position is the only one who posts a blind – meaning there is only one blind per hand, rather than traditional small/big blind format.
The action starts with the player seated to the left of the button. Each hand then plays out according to Texas Hold’em rules, with pre-flop, flop, turn and river betting rounds.
If you’ve played Texas Hold’em games before, the rules of 6+ Hold’em are easy to follow.
But don’t forget: contrary to regular Texas Hold'em games, in 6+ Hold’em a flush beats a full-house. A five-card hand consisting of Ace, 6, 7, 8, 9 (any suit) is also deemed a straight. All other hand rankings remain the same.
